Have You Thought About Starting a Blog?

“Have you thought about starting a blog?”  I’ve heard those words before.  And I had thought about it…so I did it.  I thought it would be simple and easy and I could just write all day long and propel myself to blogging glory.

Blogging is not quite simple and easy.

It’s actually hard work.  It’s rarely just writing a few paragraphs and hitting the “publish” button.  There is the writing, the editing, the graphics, the marketing, the networking, the maintenance, the financials…and let’s not forget the little stuff like learning html and SEO.  (Which I’m still not good at by the way.)  Basically, imagine starting a small newspaper or magazine with absolutely no experience except typing and having to do every single job yourself.  Yep, that pretty much explains it.

Also, most people don’t take you very seriously until you start raking in the big money.  FYI:  I don’t rake in the big money.  Read into that what you will.  However, blogging is cheaper than therapy.  Sort of.  It can be very cathartic to get things off your chest sometimes.  On the one hand, I don’t want That One Mom to be one of those blogs that people associate with arguments and rants.  On the other, there are some things that I sincerely believe in and I refuse to loosen my stance on.  Other people are free to believe or say whatever they want, but on my blog I get to approve the comments!

Still, blogging has its perks and if you have any kind of knowledge that you’ve ever wanted to share, a blog is a great place to do it.  There are many bloggers who support their entire family with blog income.  There are many who do it just for fun.  It’s a very versatile thing!

If you’ve ever considered it, here are a few steps to get you started:

  1. Decide what you want to write about.  Choose something you have experience with.  Recipes, childcare, underwater basket weaving…write about what you know best!
  2. Choose a blog name.  For instance, That One Mom.  Except that one is already taken. (Haha!)
  3. Choose a domain name.  That name should be as close to your blog name as possible (like thatonemom.com).  Sometimes the one that matches your blog name isn’t available.  Try to get as close as you can though!  Domain names can be purchased through companies like GoDaddy or provided by your hosting company.  The purpose of having them separate really depends on how much control you want to exert over your blog!
  4. Pick a hosting company and sign up.  There are actually a lot of companies out there.  Most people seem to go with whatever is least expensive, but that is not always great when you start getting lots of pageviews.  If your blog starts growing, you will may want to switch to a different company later on.
  5. Start setting up your blog.  There are a lot of free themes out there (just do a search) or you may choose to purchase one.
  6. Write something and hit “publish”!!

That’s pretty much it in a nutshell.  If you decide you want to start a blog and need help, just drop me a note!!
